MAULOA CD MAKING STORY
In always seeking the ultimate, MARTH has made recordings in Hollywood, Tokyo and Hawaii. Some of the top musicians have been brought together in studios of the highest sound quality to record music of exquisite magnificence and sensitivity. MARTH's most recent recording was conducted in Honolulu, Hawaii, coordinated by Derek Nakamoto, a Japanese-American Honolulu native who has been active in the American music scene such as Hollywood movie projects, and as a pianist and an arranger for various popular artists. The recording took place in Studio 909, a spacious studio that used to be a rehearsal room for the now disbanded Honolulu Symphony where numerous movie soundtracks have been recorded. The former string players of the Honolulu Symphony reunited for a day of recording, and a luxurious atmosphere prevailed as though it were recreating the Good Old Hollywood movie sound. The feeling of the day is captured well in the lyrics of one of MARTH’ s pieces recorded that day, the direct and truthful message- “Just us together, then nothing else matters.” In the past, Hawaiian people had no writing system. They revered nature; they had a sense of oneness with nature, and a love and respect for the precious aspect we call life. Their sense of awe towards the gods, who embody nature, had been passed down by word-of-mouth through the generations, giving a deep sense that people and nature are profoundly connected; a great presence had been nurtured over the centuries. Such a vast capacity for tolerance might have been a factor in realizing the harmonious Honolulu recording. The string players generously extended the recording time in order to give an even better performance; the guitarist played pure-hearted, reminiscent of his childhood where he grew up close to nature in Maui, the son of a cowboy. A harpist in her Polynesian garb earnestly strummed on her instrument like a Greek goddess. The pianist talked about his dream to return to his hometown and guide the younger generation. Each had his and her own thoughts and dreams, but the music which had come through MARTH seemed to take all of them to a higher sphere, to a sphere where everything is one and connected. And we would like to call this new music “Hawaii Healing Music".
